Why do modern sequels have to re-write older movies? This trend is the cancer of cinema; it makes not only the sequels bad, but the entire series seem awful in retrospect.
Examples:
THE PREDATOR - you remember the older movies you know and love? You enjoy the coherent lore established throughout five films and countless comic books and games? Well screw you, buddy! It's not like that at all! The real reason for everything that's happened is completely different, these aren't Predators or Hunters, these are... Evolvers! Or Upgraders! And let's bury it at this point, teasing bunch of nonsense and not following on anything because we destroyed any potential the series has ever had. Enjoy!
PROMETHEUS / ALIEN COVENANT - you remember the older movies you know and love? You enjoy the coherent lore established throughout four films and countless comic books and games? Well screw you, buddy! It's not like that at all! The weird and fascinating fossilised alien was a blue bodybuilder in a suit! Also, nonsense! The series is destroyed beyond repair! And now it doesn't even have any closure!
THE LAST JEDI - you remember the older movies you know and love? You enjoy the coherent lore established throughout six films and countless comic books and games? Well screw you, buddy! It's not like that at all! All the effort by the Rebellion is instantly cancelled, all your beloved heroes die horrible deaths without achieving anything! Also, that expanded universe we've been crafting for 30 years? Yeah, throw it in the dumpster!
There are other examples but you know what I mean. Say what you want about Indy and Crystal Skull, but at least this film didn't try to re-write its predecessors. Now the series has three cool movies and a failed one. But The Predator, new Alien movies? They make the entire series seem worse in retrospect, and they make it IMPOSSIBLE to get these franchises back on track. Because after the final films, you can't just undo the harm. These aren't just failed entries, these are rewrites so deep that they can't be ignored in the context of the series. You either reboot everything from scratch (which undoes years of the series' history and is quite pointless) or go deeper into the mess.
So, thank you, modern sequels, you made all my favourite movies worse.
