The soundtrack to The Greatest Showman doesn’t usually get a lot of love

(I’m sorry if this comes across as an incoherent opinion, it’s a bit hard to properly get my point across...)

I have only seen The Greatest Showman once. Not in theatres but a couple of months ago when it was released on DVD. And my opinion of the movie was that it was an average movie with an amazing soundtrack. Yes, some scenes were poignant and made me feel all the feels (I cried pretty hard in one scene), but overall, I didn’t really feel like anything of substance happened. There was no real character development, no character motivation, no real plot. Just a series of events that happened until the movie was over.

So how come I can’t get the movie out of my head? Simple. The songs. Not only are the songs such catchy earworms, but they have such high production values, amazing choreography (see: The Other Side), emotional and powerful vocal performances, wonderful instrumentals, and such relatable, strong lyrics. Back when the song first came out, I knew “This is Me” was a winner. I knew it would string a chord with so many people since the lyrics were just so powerful. Even though I hadn’t seen the movie at that time, just listening to the song on its own for the first time had me hoping that it would win the Oscar for Best Song.

Now that I’ve seen the movie, I’ve come to know the other songs as well. My favourite overall is The Greatest Show, but I also love This is Me, and The Other Side (to be honest, the only songs I don’t really like are Tightrope and Never Enough).

I feel like I’m rambling randomly a bit here. It’s hard to describe how relatable I find some of the lyrics. I’ll just copy some of my favourite lines from the songs here to try to help get my point across:

“I am brave, I am bruised, I am who I'm meant to be, this is me”

“I'm not scared to be seen, I make no apologies, this is me”

“Run away, they say, no one’ll love you as you are”

“And I know that I deserve your love. There’s nothing I’m not worthy of”

“Where the runaways are running the night”

“Take the world and redefine it. Leave behind your narrow mind”

“I think of what the world could be. A vision of the one I see. A million dreams is all it's gonna take”

“Don’t you wanna get away from the same old part you gotta play”

“Ain’t in a cage so I don’t need to take the key”

“You would finally live a little, finally laugh a little. Just let me give you the freedom to dream and it'll wake you up and cure your aching. Take your walls and start 'em breaking. Now that's a deal that seems worth taking”

“Won’t let them break me down to dust, I know that there’s a place for us”

“When everyone tells us what we can be, how can we rewrite the stars?”

“What’s waited till tomorrow starts tonight”

“But those are someone else's dreams. The pitfalls of the man I became. For years and years, I chased their cheers. The crazy speed of always needing more. But when I stop and see you here, I remember who all this was for”

Overall, this movie has some wonderfully inspirational and powerful lyrics. This is Me in particular most definitely deserves to be an anthem to anyone who has never felt accepted or loved for who they are. Because in the words of Lettie: “There’s nothing I’m not worthy of”.
