For the amount of crazy silliness the movie was capable of, the ending felt astonishingly vanilla, no different from all other superhero movies (but it's funny because we're pointing it out again, right?)
How about... Instead of Pool dying for 20 minutes just for teh lolz he's actually doing it for Cable to let his guard slip. Lying on the ground, his life leaking away, he calls Cable close to him to whisper in his ear... And snatches his time machine.
Not only does he go back in time before the final confrontation, he goes back to the BEGINNING of the movie and saves his gf. When she goes for a kiss, he holds her off, saying "No time to make kids, baby. I've got one to save."
So he goes on to save the kid using his complete knowledge of everything that happens in the future AND befriends Cable by amazing him with his seemingly sheer skill and superhero competence without breaking a sweat, all in an over-the-top action scene that totally reverses Pool's fuck-up at the beginning and makes him look rad as heck.
In the end, he receives a medal from the X-Men for best superhero, with metal face brought to tears from pride - he always knew Pool had it in him! - while the actual X-Men (very obviously green-screened in, their costumes and make-up barely done) glower unhappily from the crowd.
