Best first feature films/directors debuts of 2018

I know it’s a little late but I would like to list me favorite debut films of the past year.

  1. Hereditary(Directed by Ari Aster)- possibly the best first feature of the year and on my personal list of best horror movie of the year and second best movie of 2018. For a directorial debut Aster ignore most horror tropes and brings a tragic creepy family drama with a uncomfortable atmosphere. Aster is able to write and direct fantastic performances Tour de force Toni Collette and Alex Wolff. The screenplay is nearly flawless delivering a great twist. For a first feature Ari already seems like a veteran. I am very exicted for his next work. 10/10

  2. Eighth Grade(Directed by Bo Burnham)-Probably one of the most realistic awkward coming age of movies ever. Forget lady bird this is what I remember from my childhood as I transition into high school. The way also Bo captures the digital age for teenagers was an eye opening experience for me of generation z. Elsie Fisher is a revelation for somebody who’s very young and josh Hamilton delivers a monologue that steals the show that is very reminiscent of Michael stauhlbarg monologue in cmbyn. It’s interesting to see Bo one of the original YouTuberrs able to achieve the rarity of being able to cross into the film industry successfully compare to his other YouTube contemparies. 9/10

  3. Sorry to Bother You(Directed by Boots Riley) Not only one of the most original movies the year but is truly get out on crack. Riley brings the race relation allegory and cracks it up to a 100. Probably one of the rare movies that completely changed the tone with a twist you truly did not see coming. And it works, fantastically and hilariously. The style of Riley is impressive and the movie delivers. 8/10

  4. Wildlife(Directed by Paul Dano) A very solid debut that holds a special place in my heart because I unfortunately experience the same parents as Joe did growing up. Carey mulligan and Jake Gylenhaal give career best peformances in this simple tale of a child experiencing the desloution of his parents marriage and their midlife crisis. Dano has always been an underrated actor but this first film showed he has potential to be taken seriously as a director and finally taken control of his career. 8/10

Honorable mentions: 1. A star is born directed by Bradley Cooper 2. Searching directed by Aneesh Chagany 3. The Tale directed by Jennifer Fox 4. Mid 90s directed by Jonah Hill 5. A quiet place directed by John Krasinki
