I saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the big screen earlier today and had a strange emotional reaction to it

It’s the second time I’ve seen the film, the first time being on Blu Ray. There was so much more I noticed in terms of little details which made the narrative as a whole more cohesive, but it was the ending in particular that I had a strong reaction to. I was simply holding back tears the entire time. I’m not really sure why, though there are some factors I can point out. Just be fact that everyone was so mesmorised with the aliens that they didn’t really care when Roy and Jillian showed up to the main base to watch them put me in a place of happiness. The moment was so grand and monumental that they, as humans, shared that moment together.

I also noticed the theme of language. Bob Balaban’s character translates for Francois Truffaut’s character the entire film, and Spanish and Hindu translators also make an appearance. This ties into the final scene, as they have to use music in order to communicate with the aliens, and the universality of this means of communication made me well up in the face for some damn reason. This is a masterpiece of the highest order.
