fortunate enough to just get back from a q&a with nicole kidman following a screening of "destroyer". the film is eh, but she is really good. beyond the startling physical transformation, it's such a weary, shamed and tired performance. it's like every breath and every step is punctuated with pain. if it weren't for olivia colman, probably my favorite performance by an actress this year.
i'd never been much of a fan of kidman until i saw "lion". found her to be dull and never quite willing to make a surprising choice. between this, "boy erased", and her fiercely bad ass warrior queen in "aquaman", i've gained a newfound respect. she relayed an interesting anecdote about seeking out karen kusama to make this film with her, to support female driven film and independent film as a whole. her mother relayed to her, "nicole, you really need to take a big bite out of this world," and she's been doing it.
