Anyone notice the trend of Paul Giamatti suddenly showing up in a movie’s third act? I just finished “I Think We’re Alone Now” and he shows up as a pivotal “twist” character. I can only think of “Cosmopolis” as another example, but I’m positive it’s occurred in other films. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 kind of has two sudden Giamatti’s.
By Sudden Giamatti, I mean that there is no indication of Paul Giamatti being in the film, without looking up marketing materials or IMDB. A Sudden Giamatti can also mean his appearances that serve no purpose to the narrative.
Don’t get me wrong, I think “Guy Who Suddenly Shows Up” is the perfect niche typecast for Paul Giamatti. I am genuinely more excited about a film every time he shows up and I’m not expecting it. It is something that should be celebrated. So... /r/suddengiamatti anyone?
