Why do Americans mess with their own national anthem?

It seems to me that most people who perform a national anthem try to give an accurate interpretation of it. Certainly in the UK, be it the Scots, Welsh or English Anthems, it is usually someone well renowned in classical circles who belts it out. I have never seen any real variance to this, and would think the performer a narcissist if they turned the anthem into something else.

Just watched the U.S. Anthem before the Pacquiao fight. The performer (can't find who she was) warbled all over the place. Chose a different tempo to what I've seen before, and repeated the last line twice (The brave). I feel like I've seen this from the U.S. Anthem before, but I'm not going to trawl through Anthem replays.

Y'all into that in the USA? I get that she might want to 'make it her own', but it isn't hers is it?

Anthems are there, imo, to show some national solidarity. To maybe inspire the athletes a bit. Everyone gets to sing along and inspire the team. The sight of sports people crying as their Anthems are sung is a truly moving part of major sporting events.

You can't join in if the performer is adding their own notes, rhythm and words.

Just wondered what you think?
