Quite frankly, I feel like this decade is perhaps one of the greatest decades for cinema in the UK, where there's a whole slew of absolutely fantastic films for all different tastes. What are some of your favourite choices from then - I'm eager to see what sorts of films will pop up! I'll put in 3 of my favourites to springboard -
Brief Encounter - perhaps the definitive 1940s British film. Beautifully directed by David Lean, masterfully performed by Celia Johnson (my favourite performance of all-time) and Trevor Howard in one of the great onscreen romances, and some of the most starkly beautiful B&W cinematography.
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp - beautiful Technicolour masterpiece from Powell & Pressburger about the life and times of a career British soldier, brilliantly played by Roger Lives, and also featuring Anton Walbrook and an incredibly young, astonishing Deborah Kerr. Funny and poignant in equal measure.
Odd Man Out - I'm sure many of you will want to discuss The Third Man so let me talk about one of Carol Reed's lesser known works. Incredible thriller set in Ireland featuring the always great James Mason as an IRA agent on the run. Creates a small town community feeling brilliantly alongside an escalating tension.
