Anyone else confused about John Ottman's Oscar win?

I'm not talking about why he won or the quality of Bohemian Rhapsody. That's a whole different discussion. I'm talking about what he won for.

For those unaware, John Ottman won the Oscar for Best Film Editing.

I immediately recognized his name when he was announced as the winner, I just couldn't put my finger on from where. I brushed it off because I often research movies and their cast members so I probably saw him credited as an editor on another movie at some point.

Fast forward to today. I am driving to work listening to a station based on film scores from Google Play Music and a song from the soundtrack of X-Men: Days of Future Past starts playing. I really liked the song so I looked down at my phone to see what it was called and that's when I saw it. Who composed the music for this particular X-Men movie? John Ottman.

It turns out, it looks like he has composed for loads of movies, including Bohemian Rhapsody!

I have never heard of a composer also being a film editor. I looked him up and it seems he has even done double duty on some movies, composing the score then turning around and editing the entire film!

Is this normal? It seems really strange to me that a big budget Hollywood movie wouldn't have at least two different people performing these roles.
