Who thinks Adele and Emma should have just stayed together? Emma didn't seem sexually fulfilled with Lise, and Adele was seriously depressed.
I know some of you might use the rhetoric that they "weren't right for each other", but I wonder if anyone is really right for a person. I think you have relationships with people because they have something you need, or can offer you growth. It's not necessarily about the same views or status or intelligence. It's personal, it's about encouraging them to see with a non-monocular vision.
Emma was very prone to isolating Adele, who craved attention and intimacy. Emma used her work to fulfil her, while Adele was fulfilled by romantic love. Ultimately, it is Emma who decides she is too busy for Adele, and Adele pursues intimacy elsewhere.
If you've seen the film you know what happens.
I'm interested in hearing what other people think - these two girls seemed so in love with each other for such a long time that it seemed almost cruel, and cold, of Emma to suddenly fall into the arms of Lise and parade Lise around like an object in front of Adele who was still heartbroken. Perhaps this is Emma's style, always has to have a lover and always has to leave to "upgrade". We saw she was on the arms of another girl in the beginning of the film, before she even met Adele. So perhaps she's one of those people who needs a partner to validate her.
