I teach an intro to film class at a university. This week's unit is on narrative, and we'll watch a feature-length film midway through the week, but I'm looking for a good short film to screen in class to kick off our discussion. This is my second time teaching the course, and I did something similar last semester, but the film I chose then was 23 minutes long (classes are 50 mins) and we didn't end up having enough time to get to a bunch of important concepts in the follow-up discussion.
So, any suggestions for a replacement short? I feel like this should be an easy task for me, but my main struggle is finding something short enough. Or, if it's the right length, then it's a little too far into avant garde/experimental territory. Ideally, I'd like something 12 minutes or less with straightforward, classical narrative that is relatively accessible, as my students are mostly college freshmen with no background in film. I don't have many stipulations other than that, but it'd be great if it had 2+ characters and was rooted in a clear social/cultural context (vague, I know).
The film I showed last semester was Andrea Arnold's Wasp, if that helps. I'm sure the answer is staring me right in the face, so if anyone could point out the obvious, I'd super appreciate it!
ETA: OH, and very importantly: it needs to be available online somewhere, preferably for free, but I'd be willing to throw down a few dollars for a rental if need be. We have access to Kanopy through the university, too. TIA!
