Are there any movies out there where the initial project was less than spectacular but a sequel somehow got greenlighted and was a hit?
This was inspired by a comment on the post regarding Will Smith dropping out of the sequel to Suicide Squad. The commenter notes that although the original more or less stunk, James Gunn is directing the sequel, giving fans hope that it will make up for the flop on the first go around.
There are obviously movies where the sequel surpasses the original-The Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Knight-but both of those movies and many other solid sequels build off of quality first movies. I’m curious as to if there are any movies where the sequel essentially saved the franchise and redeemed for a lackluster first movie.
Let me know if you guys know of any movies like this. Thought it might be a fun discussion.
