William H. Macy directed a sh*tty road trip sex comedy and I need to know why

So, the Layover. It’s been on TV for a few weeks now and I could tell by the poster that it wasn’t my thing. It stars Kate Upton and Alexandra Daddario, best known for having great tits (not trying to be a bitch, that’s honestly all I knew about them).

They play two best friends who suck at life. To distract themselves from career paths that are going nowhere (Daddario is kind of fired from a teaching gig for no good reason; Upton tries and fails to sell toxic North Korean cosmetics to some department store), they decide to take an impromptu girls’ trip. Something goes wrong with the plane and they end up stuck in St. Louis, with some hot blonde dude (best known for playing a character nobody liked on Fox’s Sleepy Hollow). They proceed to lose their fucking minds and start fighting over him. In the end [spoiler alert] nobody wins, everyone involved loses their dignity. Poor man’s Chris Hemsworth sleeps with both of them, ditches them to go to a wedding (his own, it turns out), then they go after him in the hopes of warning his wife (who is Asian, which the movie draws attention to when Upton notes that he ‘went Asian’). Ultimately, Bridzilla turns out to be a control freak so they just laugh the whole thing off and leave without telling her. Because being married to her is enough punishment for him...?

Now, I think Daddario can actually be pretty funny, as she demonstrated in Baywatch. And Kate Upton is…not an actress, but she’s charming and fun. They gave this their all, but couldn’t salvage a movie that was destined to go straight to DirectTV. The script is shitty, sexist and randomly racist towards the end. The direction is what you would expect from some nobody who made a living working on multi-cam sitcoms, before stumbling into this job. At least that’s what I assumed, until I read the synopsis and-

Directed by William H. Macy? What? How?! I could not believe that I was seeing his name on this. I ended up watching the whole thing just to figure out if I made a mistake in judging the movie by its poster…

William H. Macy? Oscar and Emmy-nominated William H. Macy? Fargo and Boogie Nights and Shameless William H. Macy...?

Why? Why would he want this on his resume? Was he bored? Was he doing a favour for a friend? Did he just want to get paid to hang it with two young hot women for a few weeks? Is he not the quintessential ‘cool uncle’, as I always saw him, but rather that embarrassing uncle who gets drunk at family gatherings and hits on his son’s new girlfriend?

Jfc. You think you know someone...
