A quick question about The Dawn Wall

Hi. Just a quick question, rock climbing related for those who know a thing about this. Just saw The Dawn Wall and loved it. In some ways I like it even more than Free Solo.

My question is in The Dawn Wall, if Tommy and Kevin are doing the first ever ascent of that specific notorious route on El Cap it surprised me that there was no footage of them affixing/hammering/clamping in the caribiners and holds on the wall. Obviously the Doc shows them clipping their rope into each caribiner going up but was surprised I didn't see shots of them adding new ones. Would that be something they would have done when descending from the top with ropes before their climb up?

I guess to a novice like me my thought was one of the hardest part about this insane climb would be there would be nothing to clip your rope through on the initial ascent from the bottom - since it's a first ascent they would need to be the ones to add the holds and all that sketchy work.

Am I wrong?
