On Saturday, I went out to watch Captain Marvel with a free friends of mine. As the movie went through its first act, the woman in the next row took her phone from her purse and started texting someone. For years, I have gone on rants to my friends and family about how rude and disrespectful I think using your phone during a movie is. Since it is a such a dark room, I can't help but see the instant flash of right that illuminates the person's stupid face, no matter how far they are sitting. The woman in front of me continued texting and I was agitated, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe there was an emergency or something was happening in her life. Who knows? As the movie progresses and Brie Larson and Samual Jackson are doing their thing on screen, I now see that the woman has started googling things. I can't tell what she is exactly looking for, but either way, that is getting me more angry. I try to focus my attention on the movie screen and push her out of my mind. However, from the corner of my eye, I see a bright red light flash. This fucking girl is opening Yelp. I look over to my friend sitting next to me in disbelief. What restaurant do you really need to know about right now? I had it. I was going to tap her on the shoulder and tell her to put it away. That was the plan. For the most part, I followed that plan. I leaned over, tapped the shoulder, and told her to put it away. However, by that point, I was so angry that I reached even further and smacked the phone out of her hand and sat down. As she turned around in shock, dismay, and fear, I pointed at her and reiterated my stance about putting the phone away. She sat there for a good 5 minutes and then decided to leave. Her boyfriend, who I am not sure if he was aware of what had just transpired, hesitated before getting and leaving as well. I kept thinking that should would come back with the manager or something to complain.
This is not my normal mode of behavior, but I love films so much that the ever-growing talking, phone-use, and lack of movie etiquette is making me second guess going to movies. I want to know if I was wrong. I completely understand that under different circumstances, there probably would have been a actual fist fight between myself and the boyfriend. Either way, there needs to be a way to end the ruining the sanctity of the theater. People need to unplug from their device for more than two hours. My friends now think I am the movie police.
