How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World - Review of the Feels [Spoilers]

This movie, man. I just saw it. It's really amazing. It's got a whole new feel to the series, and it's great. New soundtrack, still amazingly delivered by John Powell. Beautiful scenery, and plenty of emotion (one of the only 2 movies I've ever cried at!).

This movie made me feel so many things. The start was really cool, very cinematically pleasing (lol I'm really trying sound smart- don't worry I'll get dumber later). The movie seemed to slowly get more and more emotional. As we see the hard decisions made, and the suspense with Grimmel. I love how he toys with the riders, furthering the suspense and giving a great look at his mindset.

When we see the light fury out for the first couple of times and Toothless trying to flirt with her, that's just adorable. It made me happy, and eased the anxiety I'd been feeling from the earlier bits.

It didn't last long.

When toothless left with the light fury and went to the hidden world the first time, seeing the worry on Hiccup's face and his worrying about Toothless's safety, it just makes you worry the same, especially when we don't see Toothless for a while.

Hiccup and Astrid go and find the hidden world, where the movie REALLY starts hitting you in the feels. You see all of these dragons flying around and fan-boying over the 2 night furies. Then you see Hiccup's face. He realizes that Toothless might not want or need them anymore. I nearly cried here, and it's not even the worst part.

Fast forward a lot, to where they are on the cliffs of New Berk saying goodbye.

I couldn't do it. Just seeing these 2 characters bond over these last years, and seeing that they're gonna have to split. These 2 (Toothless and Hiccup) are together. They're supposed to be together. They're more than best friends, even. They've been through so many things together, and the moment just conveys this further. Toothless really is going to leave after all this time. All of this evolution, maturation, and change we've seen not only Toothless and Hiccup go through, but everyone else as well. It's just a sad moment. The tears on everyone's faces, the music, the scene, and all of the people taking their saddles off as Toothless and Hiccup look at each other for the last time for years.

As the dragons flew away, I wasn't happy. I couldn't be. I knew it was a happy ending, but I still just couldn't be happy. I didn't want toothless to go. He had a personality and had bonded even further, I didn't want the movie to do me like that.

When we see Hiccup again with a beard and his family, it's great. Then we see the waterfall to the Hidden World. The night furies on the edge. We see Toothless and his mate their with their children, and it's a great scene. But Toothless doesn't even recognize Hiccup or Astrid. You can see his pupils are slits again like in the first film before he'd gotten to know humans. It was like he reverted back to his primal instincts in the few years they'd been apart. I felt sad again.

Thankfully, he eventually recognized them when he sniffed, but Toothless almost DIDNT, and that would've broken my heart further. Seeing these 2 bond over years and years of trauma and work together, only to be separated and one forgotten about the other.

I still couldn't be happy with the ending, despite Hiccup's children touching Toothless like in the first film and them making up again. It's a beautifully happy ending, but it left a hole in my soul. I still knew that these 2 characters we've seen throughout these amazing films will probably not see each other much more.

TL;DR: This movie is so emotional in so many ways. Seeing the characters together and changing, it's gorgeous. Seeing Toothless and the light fury flirting, adorable. But then seeing the 2 characters we love most, Toothless and Hiccup, part ways. Regardless of how happy the ending was, it made me feel like there was a hole in me. Knowing these characters we've seen throughout these films changing, maturing, and growing together end up splitting and not seeing each other again often is just heart-wrenching. I don't want Hiccup and Toothless to be apart, because they belong together.

I would like to think they still visit each other every so often, but I'm worried that's not the case. This movie has many amazing aspects, especially the ways the emotions are conveyed.

I hope you enjoyed this poorly-worded review of the emotions in this movie. Thanks for reading!
