Is it appropriate to make a combination word?

This is difficult for me to ask as I'm not sure how to. Trying to write/ correct grammar and spelling in a story I have on hand, but I came across a word that has me stuck. I know there are words that are combined for descriptive words (for example, "smog" for fog and smoke) and such, but this is more of a title for an object.

"Ear fin" or "Earfin"?

It is a common word in the story, so I wish to correct it now than later. Does this sort of problem pertain more to personal preference, or does it fall more in the laws of literature in general such as when you use past tense and other rules?
