I think Climax is genuinely perfect, yet reviews are barely hitting a C- (70/100). It's simultaneously his most accessible and darkest film, which is a perfect formula for success when you think about it (in the sense of an artist realizing a peak creative technique while trying something genuinely innovative and new, story/plot/theme-wise).
But let's be real -- while Climax is genuinely refreshing in every way -- it's not that radically different from Gaspar's overall focus on life/death duality and altered mindstates. Just take a step back, that's his general 'thing'.
Soooo.... really.... WHY are there SOOO many higher reviews this time around... and yet NOWHERE CLOSE TO UNIVERSAL ACCLAIM? It's obvious that even with technical perfection, people don't like Noe's flicks. Yet, 71 is the score right now. This score is so high for Noe, that he jokingly (or possibly-seriously) suggested a "I must be doing something wrong. I have to take a long holiday and rethink my career.".
That says to me that there is a slow, gradual shift of demographic and/or taste happening with more appreciators of his work are the same ones in the top spots reviewing film.
