This ain't an ad, reddit, I'm just curious.
The most recent episode of The Grand Tour (S3E8) featured a minor plot arc of a very slow build set of encounters. The episode took place in the deserts of Nevada, and only one member of the trio could see the person who they encountered. Eventually the figure (it is implied) attempts to kill one of the trio's members with a rifle from afar. These encounters continue throughout the episode, very fleeting as business continues as usual except Clarkson (the only one to see who I assume represents the devil) becomes slightly weirded out whenever he does see the figure, and the others deny seeing him.
Eventually they slug it out with the figure (in the form of a demolition derby, admittedly) and think they've won and killed him- the others still unsure of his existence- until the final scene, where the figure lights a circle of flames around their campsite and walks away slowly, leaving the viewer to assume they were killed.
I'll admit I haven't watched many horror movies and have no idea what it could be referencing. I've seen others suggest "The Hills Have Eyes" (1977) for its featuring of the desert, camper vans, and dangerous encounters, or "Duel" (1971) for its encounters with a single person (albeit in a truck) while driving through the desert. I've also found "Race with the Devil" (1975) which has the desert, camper vans, a (tenuous) link to the devil, and a ring of fire around the main characters in the end. I was just hoping somebody else might know better than I do and have some obscure film that matches perfectly.
Thanks so much for any help you're able to provide.
