First off, great movie. The overwhelming and persistent feeling of dread, a plain, yet cryptic illustration of the banality of terror, and those creepy naked cult members lurking in the shadows scared the bejeezus out of me.
At the end of the movie, when Peter wakes up after being knocked unconscious, the house must already be set for the transition (I’m not sure this is the right word, but it seems like no one actually intended to kill him...almost like he had to take his own life in order for the host body to be acceptable, like how Annie had to be the one to do the incantation that allowed whatever spirit to enter the home). When he gets out of bed and walks down the hallway to his parents’ room, he hears a commotion downstairs.
What made the sound? Was it Steve being dragged into place? A door opening to let the funeral home attendant into the house? I can only assume Aster had a reason for every effect in the movie, but I can’t figure this one out.
