What did Elijah's last words meant in "Unbreakable"?

[SPOILER ALERT] [SPOILER ALERT] [SPOILER ALERT]

At the finishing moments of the movie, David (Willis) and Elijah (Jackson) have a conversation that I didn't understand well.
Memory refresher: At Elijah's house there is a art sale with B&W prints of comic books. Both David and Elijah go to a separate room to have the last conversation. When the time comes, Elijah closes the conversation with "I guess this is where we shake hands". Due to David's ability to see the person's past by having close contact, he sees Elijah being the starter of the three big incidents, all to just find that "hero" he had been looking for.

The conversation goes as follows:

E: "To not know your place in this world. To not know why you're here. That's... That's just an awful feeling."

D: "What have you done?!"

E: "I almost gave up hope. There were so many times I questioned my self-"

D: "You killed all those people..."

E: "But I found you. So many sacrifices just to find you.
Now that we know who you are I know who I am. I'm not a mistake. It all makes sense!
In a comic, do you know how you can tell who the arch-villan's going to be? He's the exact opposite of the hero, and most times they're friends, like you and me!
I should've known why back when. You know why, David? Because of the kids."

That last bold part is what I don't understand. Who are "the kids"? What does Elijah should have known before?
