Why can't some films be updated?

When Christopher Nolan rebooted Batman in 2005 it was a huge success. People loved how he took what had been - at least on the big screen - a gimmicky, goofy, poorly scripted superhero franchise and made it into a serious, dark and grounded story. They modernized it. Look at the difference between Batman Begins (2005) and Batman and Robin (1997).

Now, why didn't that work for RoboCop ? The original RoboCop screamed 80s robot flick and was campy, over the top and cheesy. It was rebooted and modernized much in the style Batman was, and everyone hated it. They said it lacked the feel of the original film, but the original film seems to lack a lot of the makings of a serious film. It's cartoony. The 2014 reboot of RoboCop gets more hate than possibly any reboot I'm aware of except Prometheus. What do you guys think ?
