The military is the largest budgetary spend in the US. What military operations carried out by the US in the last 20yrs have had a quantifiable affect on the countries security?

I understand the carry on affect military action can have in preventing major problems from formulating. But was direct aggressive military action required? Could the US' military be as affective at protecting the country from a defensive pov?
