So I got to see this a few days early due to the movie release schedule in Korea, and I wanted to get some of my thoughts out on it.
First off, I know a lot of people are saying they don't care about the humans in this movie, we just want to see the monsters beat each other up! But let me make it clear that the human element in this movie is not just dull or weak, but that it is SO BAD, it will likely hamper your enjoyment of those monster mashes. Godzilla 2014 was passable, but this is truly a disaster on all counts human. That speech that sounded so cool in the trailer? In the context of the movie, it's laughable. The main character Mark? Well, as a character he's absolutely stupid, and some of the faces the actor plays are so ridiculous they look like Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber Too. I'm sure he's a fine actor, but not here. What I'm trying to say is don't expect even the bare minimum for the humans in this story. It's terrible and will put a damper on your movie going experience with how atrocious it is.
Now, can we talk about the colors of this movie? I know Hollywood is big on the blue and orange kick, but this is just ridiculous. 85% of the movie looks like someone took the lightroom temperature slider and dragged it ALL the way to the left. In an airplane? Blue. In a forest in China? Blue. In Boston? You guessed it, blue. And when it's not blue, it's the exact opposite. The movie is more orange than Donald Trump with a spray tan. There's probably a total of 5 minutes of normal colors in this movie. It looks cool and all in the trailers, but watching it for two hours it gets a little bit ridiculous. If we mention color and weather, then we have to mention why every single monster fight is staged in the dark, in the rain or snow, and shot mostly close up. It obscures a lot of the action that we all came for, and comes across rather disappointing. However when the wide shots come...oh god they are glorious!
Sometimes the action feels a bit like a Transformers movie here. We know generally what's happening, but due to shaky cams and close ups we can't really tell. That's present here, and there's a lot of it. Generally however I enjoyed the action and this wasn't a huge detriment.
The sound effects and score are great, no complaints.
I am not really a huge Godzilla fan, but I'm not a hater either. I was excited to go see this and went on opening day, but I left feeling extremely disappointed. Say what you want, but watching the monsters fight each other in the dark close up wasn't QUITE as awe inspiring as I hoped, and the human plot in this movie was so bad that I felt myself laughing or mentally facepalming several times throughout the movie. If you hope to see the monsters fight, then most of this movie will be okay for you. The rest of the movie...well, it's terrible.
