I always hear Al Pacino hasn’t had a good acting performance post-2000, but people are sleeping on 2015’s “Danny Collins,” whereby he plays an aging singer modeled after Neil Diamond.
Collins gets to the end of his career and after receiving a long-lost Letter from John Lennon, he decides to change his life. Soon, he decides he needs to reunite with his long-lost son, played by an excellent Bobby Cannavale.
The interplay between Pacino & Cannavale is very touching and Pacino displays quite the emotional range and delicate sensitivity needed from a character trying to reconnect with his son. There’s also his interactions with his daughter-in-law (an excellent foul-mouthed, Jennifer Garner) and his granddaughter that prove engaging, as well.
Additionally, there are delightful scenes involved with Annette Bening, as his romantic interest and Christopher Plummer, as his friend/manager.
So much is required of his character away from the singing and dancing and he absolutely nails it. If you haven’t seen it, highly recommend!
