Let's talk about Scorsese's editing

I'd really like to hear how you all feel about this. I've noticed this editing in several Scorcese films recently (The Departed, The Aviator), that I can only describe as "jarring." It usually occurs when two actors are both talking in frame, and rather than cutting to a completely different angle to continue to scene, it cuts to an angle very similar to the last one.

This leads to the cut being disorienting and makes the differences of continuity in the positions and faces of the actors much more apparent than if it cut to a different angle.

In simple terms, it seems as if the cameraman takes a step back/to the side between cuts. I only bring this up due to Scorsese's prestige and high regard among critics, and I've most notably seen this in many of his films that I've seen.

Thoughts?
