Rewatched Apocalypse Now last night, and I enjoyed it even more the second time. What a great and impressive film. I might watch the Redux Version next; however, I've heard mixed reviews on it. But, after finishing it I was doing some reading and holy cow this production was a mess.
From production originally scheduled to take 6 weeks but taking 16 months, to Brando showing up late, overweight, often drunk, and having read neither the script nor Heart of Darkness, to Martin Sheen having a heart attack on set, drug use rampant among cast and crew (Dennis Hopper getting a super young Laurence Fishburne addicted to heroin??), the list can go on and on. It truly is amazing that this film ever got completed with what is known about the production and without Coppola's passion (and personal funding) for the project it certainly doesn't get made and we never get this classic.
What are some other examples of insane productions/on set stories?
