Which Are Films You Think Are Misunderstood As Simply Being "Gimmicks"?

For me, it would have to be "Memento". I heard some people criticizing the reverse structure of it for simply making the film look more "different" but the structure really serves an important role for the movie in order to explore its themss and put us on the perspective of Leonard as just like him, we just encounter in this situation where we just killed someone while having no context of what has happened before. We have to come back to what has happened before in order to clear our memory. We also have no idea about the people we meet at first and we just assume that they are just our allies and this is exactly how the film is putting it at first but we slowly start realizing about the true intentions of what is happening and we come to distrust everything that we have seen so far as it is manipulating us, just like everyone is manipulating Leonard. It makes you feel insecure about what you're seeing, helps you empathize with Leonard's situation and also exemplifies the themes of the movie. It is perfectly executed.

This is just an interpretation of mine but I believe that the reverse structure does more than helping us empathize with the protagonist and his condition but it also tells us his desire to go back to his past and undo all the bad that occurred on his life and the fact that Leonard says around the end ¨I want my life back¨ reinforces this idea even more for me. Also, that Nolan intentionally changed some details of the information shown in the film as a way of indirectly telling us that our memories can be manipulated, can be unreliable at times and not notice at all the first time we watch it and the next time we see it again. We just accept it without questioning it like Leonard.

Which one you think it does a lot more than just being a gimmick?
