I grew up spending large amounts of time with my paternal grandfather, and his film collection at death was in the thousands. I watched tons of movies, mostly Star Wars, 80s/90s action, and comedies. Unfortunately, I missed out on all the classics.
Watching old films as an adult is such a drag for me. I don't understand what makes all these films so much better.
I am very picky about what I watch. And I'd like to think I have good taste in film, but when I see long lists of required viewing or "greatest ever", very little of what I like is actually there.
I might see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Gladiator, or Terminator 2. But Cashback? The Fountain? Whiplash? The Witch? Akira? Nope.
By what metrics am I missing out on to understand the adoration for so many older films? I guess me looking at the love of old black and white films as strange is equivalent to a teenager wondering why I still think Melee is the greatest Smash game.
