Nothing is perfect, so what is a flaw you see in one of your favorite films, be it a nit-pick or a legitimate issue?
The Godfather is easily my favorite film. I love almost everything about it.
My one minor gripe is that the majority of the film takes place over the course of one year, while the final 40ish minutes occur over something like 10 years. Entire years pass between scenes in that final act. It almost starts to feel like a Cliff’s Notes version of the story.
Of course, every scene in that last act is exceptional, but it feels like we’re missing crucial moments in Michael’s rise to power. His moral descent seems to hang entirely upon the death of his wife, rather than being a gradual process and a consequence of his newfound position of power.
It’s just an odd storytelling technique to have large and frequent time jumps occur over such a long stretch of screen time.
