I finally watched Alita with no real expectations and I didn't go on with any idea of what the story was. 2hrs later, I still don't know what the story is.
Visually, I really enjoyed it. The cyborg design looked really cool, and I didn't get lost during the fights like some other robot-fighting movies tend to do. I eventually saw past Alitas CG and enjoyed her performance.
The world it was in was really cool, I guess that's thanks to the source material.
But, I finished the movie confused about what went on. Was it a case of needing to have done familiarity with the source material? Because I don't really get some things and the end was very unsatisfactory. Based on the closing scene befits the title card, she's on debut as a professional athlete - that feels like the whole movie was about her fulfilling her ambition to play sport professionally. Did I miss the bit that explains sport is her actual motivation? I got the feeling that her motivation was to find out who she is and what happened during the fall to leave her for dead?
The pacing felt weird too. Did everything happen in a few days, weeks, months, years? It was hard to tell the passage of time during the whole thing.
Maybe I just missed things because I don't know the manga or anime
