Hello fellow Donut lords and Pretzel ladies of Reddit! I was lucky enough to have gotten some advanced tickets to go see Sonic the Hedgehog last Saturday, and I wanted to share some of my impressions of the film.
-First and foremost, the Sonic Character himself looked pretty great, especially compared to the original design. However, like half of the time, he's not very well voice acted. It sounded like Ben Schwartz delivered some of his lines drunk (Throwback to the OG Video game movie). There was definitely something off with some of the lines (but not all of them).
-This is very much your run of the mill kids film. Don't expect anything more. Kids will find this movie very entertaining. Adults will find it unoffensive at most.
-A lot of sequences are derivative of other movies. For example:There's a scene in a bar that is practically shot for shot the Xmen DOFP Quicksilver scene.
-Jim Carry is beyond Zaney and bizarre in his portrayal of Dr. Robotnik, but he's clearly having a blast and its fun to watch him ham it up on the screen the same way he used to.
-Natasha Rothwell is probably the highlight of the movie, she steals every scene that she's in and got consistent laughter in the theater.
-The film's humor (thankfully) doesn't rely on poop or fart jokes and has a good variety of humor and one really funny product placement that is so self-aware that it is actually hilarious.
Overall the movie is the definition of adequate. The movie is not going to change the narrative on video game movies, nor is it going to alter the course of mankind. It was a fun, but ultimately forgettable road-trip adventure movie that will probably please fans of the series. I would suggest going to support this movie to reward the filmmakers for listening to their fans and working tirelessly to improve the perception of the film.
Let me know what you want to know about the movie and Ill try my best to answer it. Spoiler-free of course!
