Now before someone gets all pissy with this post, let me just say that Joker is a just okay movie. I didn't find it to be spectacular and honestly I disagree with Joaquin Phoenix getting best actor when there were performances he has done that I think he deserved an oscar way over this performance and personally I thought Adam Sandler from Uncut Gems deserved a nom and Adam Driver from Marriage Story gave a more layered performance. And plus there are just some narrative issues with the film mainly at the end. Now let me just say that there are writing issues with Logan, mainly exposition issues.
The reason why I find Logan to be better than Joker is based off of the intention of both filmmakers who made this film. What makes Logan better than Joker is the fact while Logan is different from the superhero films we have seen, it still takes it's time to analyze the Superhero genre with the comic books being featured in the film. Now Joker didn't need to have Arthur or Joker reading a comic book about himself but when I heard interviews from Todd Phillips where he said stuff such as "I literally described to Joaquin at one point in those three months as like, 'Look at this as a way to sneak a real movie in the studio system under the guise of a comic book film'. It felt as if it was just a guy who was making this film out of spite rather than trying to analyze its genre it's disguising itself as. Now let's not forget that Logan director James Mangold has stated some things about the comic book genre stating in one interview that these comic book movies tend to be like "cheeseburgers" where you eat them but you quickly forget about them. (I tried looking for the interview where Mangold said that but I couldn't find it, if you guys find it let me know.) Now that in a way sounds sounds pretentious itself but the reason why personally it didn't bother me is the fact that Logan analyzed its genre and didn't completely abandon the Superhero genre.
Now again, let me just say that this is more personal than it is objective mainly because Joker is an okay film but I found Logan to be better mainly because it didn't abandon the genre and decided to analyze it where as I wish Joker had something interesting to say about the genre it was disguising itself as.
