I’m writing an essay on Blue Velvet (1986) dir. David Lynch and analyzing the character power dynamics through a Freudian lens

As the title says I’m writing a paper on arguably one of Lynch’s best work. The prompt is to analyze how a find that we watched in class pushed a “frontier” in film, that is exploring something new (geographical; economic; psychological; conceptual; etc). I know Blue Velvet was pretty novel for it’s time for employing surrealist, dream-like atmosphere and explicit sexual themes, but I want to be more specific in analyzing the psychosexual components of the movie.

I know it’s there. I can make out some parts to be relevant to Freud’s tripartite theory and Scopophilia, but I’m having trouble creating a formed thesis. I’m also required to connect this film to a more recent one with similar themes. I have in mind Ex Machina (2015) dir. by Alex Garland, which has some obvious themes of voyeurism and psychosexuality, but I’m not sure if it’s a good movie to use. I’m having similar problems connecting the dots with that movie as well.

I wanted to know if anyone else has watched either Blue Velvet or Ex Machina and had some similar ideas and of course would like to share. If anyone knows of any resources that would help, that would be great as well as I am having trouble with my research.

Thank you!
