Is it possible for someone with dementia to realize that?

I will start by saying I have very limited knowledge of dementia and how it works so I will apologize in advance if this whole question is pointless.

I am in my 40’s and I have a terrible memory, the idea of having dementia terrifies me. But what I wonder, as someone who has thought about it, is is it possible for me to realize what is happening to me during an “episode” since I am aware of it now. I know it’s not like time travel but how does the mind deal with possible anachronisms. Does it just ignore all the counter evidence, accept it as a blended reality of then and now, badly explain it away like any science in a fast and furious film?
