Dead Man Walking (1995): One of the most heartbreaking and thought provoking films I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

I am at a loss of words after watching this immensely profound film. I never get emotional with movies but this broke me down and reduced me to tears, especially during the last 20 minutes. The fact that it was based on true events made it all the more painful and tragic.

The performances from Sarandon and Penn as Sr. Helen Prejean and Matthew Poncelet were utterly amazing. The raw emotion and depth of these roles was palpable. The story itself was extremely engaging and I never found myself losing interest. Through the use of characters, the controversial subject of the death penalty is explored. We learn why some may be in support of it while others completely object it, but the audience is never forced to choose sides which is something I appreciated so much about this film.

This is something I believe everyone should see. I’m having trouble putting my thoughts into words as I make this post but I just feel something needed to be said because I don’t recall ever seeing a post about this masterpiece before.

Films like this one make me so grateful that communities like this exist so that they can be discussed. If you have seen it, i’d love to know what you think of it!
