Black Narcissus (1947) is a great non-horror horror movie.

The movie has many of the hallmarks of a horror movie, a group of nuns move to a remote, mostly abandoned former palace. There is the slightly crazy, hostile caretaker, the constant wind and night time beating of the drums, a know it all/cynical neighbor. The nuns start losing their way and questioning their choices.

If it was made today it could be viewed as psychological horror, but I don’t think that was the intention of the filmmakers. Set design and cinematography are absolutely beautiful.

Kathleen Byron plays Sister Ruth whose descent is the most obvious. Between her cheekbones and her eyes she could have just played villains for the rest of her career. She is unique unsettling appearance that is played up with lighting and make up.
