Paper Moon (1973) is such an eye candy

I watched Paper Moon just yesterday. It's rated 8/10 on IMDB, and it shouldn't come as a surprise that the movie is great. But it totally exceeded my expectations. It's so beatifully filmed. Every scene is composed so well, that you could literally frame them as pictures.

I've seen movies that are known for their scenery, but for the first time in my life I was able to consciously perceive this and appreciate fully. Maybe the fact that the movie is black and white, and thus shapes are easier to recognize, helped here.

And most importantly, it's not just about the looks. The movie has it all: entertaining plot, likeable characters, funny jokes, all these being delivered by amazing actors.

What do you think? Am I overreacting, or is it really as good as I feel? Can you recommend anything else to watch after my review?

Here are some shots to illustrate what I'm talking about. These are not in chronological order (except the first one) to avoid spoilers.

The very beginning catches attention with a nicely composed scene. Seems that even the pattern of the clouds in the sky was taken into accoun

Wide-angle lenses are used extensively to clearly separate planes with perspective

... and they are used not only for landscapes, but for almost everything

Arranging objects in lines seems like a common technique throughout the movie, this scene is not the only time it is used

Again wide lens, objects arranged in lines, and something between the characters 😉

Contrast is used a lot to draw attention to certain parts: a man in a white suite is placed on a dark background, a lady in dark dress — on a light background, a secondary character in this scene — grey on grey. I want to believe, that white suite is picked intentionally here, however such claim would be just a speculation. The lamp on the left adds some weight there not letting entire composition topple to the right

Speaking of optical weight. Train station occupies most of the frame and pushes Addie to the edge of the frame, leaving her no space in the frame. Straight railway increases the feeling, that there's no space for maneuver and her fate is decided
