Valuing human life below a personal struggle

When is it valid to be more passionate about a personal issue you are facing over loss of life? For example if a family member dies, but you've just lost your job. It would be understandable that either of these issues could be more pressing depending on the individual. Now in a more tricky situation, ten strangers die and someone calls you a hurtful slur in the same day. Would it be immoral to care less about the deaths, and not be able to get your mind off of the hurtful language used against you?
