A lot of the obits mention Alien, of course, as well as 5th Element, Lord of the Rings, even Chariots of Fire, but I feel like the best performance we got from him was in Atom Egoyan's Sweet Hereafter. So nuanced, the character was so manipulative, and he hit all the right notes. I considered him a character actor before that, but Sweet Hereafter showed me he was capable of being a lead.
I know it's a movie decently known in Canada (it frequently makes their top 10 films of all time lists), but I don't feel like enough Americans have heard of it. It also features great performances from Sarah Polley and Bruce Greenwood, as well as several Canadian character actors that have ended up in stuff like X-Files, Mutant X, Sliders, etc.
I really liked him in a lot of stuff, and I've liked him since I was a kid watching Robin and Marion, then Alien, of course, but this was the peak for me.
