This might sound like a silly question, but I’m really unsure of what it means. I always hear that it’s hard to have “bad cinematography”, but I don’t necessarily understand really good cinematography.
Do films receive the Best Cinematography Oscar for being shot well, meaning the film looks good?
Alternatively I’ve heard best cinematography Oscar means the way the film is shot serves as a story telling device, thus amplifying the film. However, if this is the case how is this distinguishable to people, for example, watching a film for the first time. I love when movies are shot really well, but to be honest I really can’t tell what makes a movie have “the best cinematography”,(Mississippi burning for example one in 1988) unless I explicitly see it either awarded to the movie or if the movie is nominated.
What should I look for when I watch movies to appreciate the cinematography?
Thanks in advance.
