what I got from the film was that DDL's character was extremely abusive, and that she was better off without him.
She stays for inexplicable reasons, but manages to gain a certain level of power over DDL by poisoning him, and using the opportunity to show him just how much he needs her, and that he isn't as strong as he thinks he is.
They then both come to this conclusion at the end and he willingly takes the poison as a sort of recognition of what's going on, and then they kiss and go on with their lives with a new power dynamic.
Clever story.
However, one thing that is irritating me is how all this was portrayed. Are we as the viewer just supposed to recognise it as a very twisted love story, and not a real relationship built on love, but on deceit and power, and that it isn't something that anyone should try and replicate, or accept.
Or is the film glorifying this type of relationship?
Because the first option will make me love the movie, and the second will make me despise it.
What did you take away from the film, and what do you think the intention was?
