Hideout by Masasumi Kakizaki would be perfect for an Ari Aster film adaptation.

So far, Ari Aster’s two films share the same strengths; they marinate you in real human horror, like the haunting depiction of the loss of a family member, to then sizzle you in well executed classic horror, like a slasher film or a supernatural horror.

The legendary horror Manga Hideout tells a similar story; a man who is treated like a worthless loser by his wife and his in-laws is drive to madness after the accidental death of his child, which he is blamed for. As the abuse from his family increases, he decides to murder his wife, but after one failed attempt during a trip out of town, they fall into a dark cavern habited by a dysfunctional family of cannibals...

If you enjoy Ari Aster’s films, you’ll find Hideout to be as enjoyable, despite a few differences in style. Hideout is known for its very unique style, and even if I doubt Ari Aster could replicate it, if he gave it his own style instead it should work amazingly.

This is a story that hasn’t been adapted yet but if it is, I couldn’t imagine a better choice than Ari Aster. Although he does seem like a man who would only work with his own material, every filmmaker does an adaptation or remake at least once, look at Tarantino (Django) and Spike Lee (Oldboy). If Ari Aster decides to give it a try, this could be it.
