Dan Loeb, an investor in Disney, wants Disney to focus on streaming and subscriptions and release Black Widow on their streaming service.
I believe that Disney should make a serious effort to protect the theaters for a number of reasons, but right now it makes sense to focus on subscriptions.
(Just to be clear, I think Black Widow should be free for subscribers.)
This year is a disaster, 2021 might be a disaster, and when things return to normal we don’t know how well potential blockbusters will perform.
Disney is losing money, but their streaming service could be the goose that lays golden eggs for decades to come.
However, I feel they need to close in on Netflix fast.
Disney should also discourage other competitors from spending too aggressively on marketing.
If they can gain enough market share in the next 12 months, and if they make the right strategic decisions, they will end up with a very robust business model that would make them far less vulnerable to market fluctuations.
As for Black Widow, the money has already been spend and I don’t think Disney should attempt to break even on a project by project base.
