Since we perceive darkness anytime that we sense no light or a very limited amount of light, anything outside of our field of vision could be considered as true darkness because no light from that area stimulates our retina. So it’s kind of analogous to when you play with a flashlight and then a cone of area lights up, just the cone of light is our vision.
