⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️Spoiler Alert ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ (just in case)
(I specify which movie because that's the one I've seen, but I'm going to talk about the story, so, it doesn't matter if you've seen the one from 1962 or if you just read the book)
So, I assume everyone here has seen the movie, and therefore I assume you know the folowing things: 1- it's based on a book written by Vladimir Nobocov 2- the main character in the book and movies is Humbert (the pedophile) 3- Humbert is the one who tells the story, so all we see/hear/etc is from Humbert's perspective 4- Have I already said Humbert is a pedophile?? 5- Dolores is Humbert's step-daughter, and she is called Lolita by Humbert.
Well, I'm going to talk about some disturbing things I've seen on the internet about this movie, and I can't accept it is like this. Ok, so, first thing that called my attention in a very very bad way: if you google the title and the year of the movie, you can see it says it's a Drama/Romance. Am I the only one who see this as a wrong thing? Like, you are talking about a "romance" between a 14 yo girl and a 37 yo man. Doesn't it feel kinda, idk, weird?? Well, I could have let it pass IF THEN I hadn't seen wat I saw. Reviews saying it was a good love story, saying don't watch it if you don't like romances, and even people saying they felt bad about Humbert ¿¿¿¿¿?????? I mean, what????? Even people saying "it shows a different form of love".
Let me get this clear. I know that at first, when the book had recently been released, (and then with the first movie too), people actually thought it was a love story. A romance. I could understand it, different times, not a common topic people would talk about often or actual discussions about it on media, so it could happen that people didn't see this story as something disturbing or wrong at all. I could get that. But I don't get that even after Vladimir Nobocov had interviews where he explained it wasn't a love story, and that Humbert was obviously sick, those you watch the movie or read the book still see it as a love story. 21st century guys, I'm sorry but I can't accept this.
So first thing to bare in mind: the whole story is presented from Humbert's perspective. That means, some things may not be real, or at least not 100%. In the movie it's obvious with the clothes Dolores wears. Girls in those times didn't show much skin, specially at her age, so the outfits she wears in the movie may not have been like that. That's the first thing we see as a red flag, that makes us realize that what we are seeing is not an objective version of the story.
Second thing, and the most important one. Dolores actively showing her desire for Humbert, while he is shown as the victim; a pasive agent in this situation. He "falls" for Dolores only because she acts seductively with the intention of making him fall for her. If you know the difference of ages but also, that the one telling the story is Humbert, you have enough to doubt about the veracity of Dolores' acts.
With these two things I mentioned, it is obvious, OBVIOUS, that this can't be a love story, but a story of manipulation and pedophilia. I'm sick of reading reviews saying it is a "different form of love", or anything that suggests this is just the story of a couple. It isn't.
Now, if you reached this point (thank you btw) what do you think about what I talk about here?
