Drums are the only instrument where the player can't actually hear what it's supposed to sound like to the audience while they're playing.

When playing drums there are all kinds of metallic sounds, and other resonance overtones and noises that mask the way it actually sounds when you're a small distance away. So the drummer has to wear headphones to listen to a live recording of what they're playing if they want to hear what it sounds like to the audience.
