According to Santa lore, naughty kids, instead of getting a toy or treat that only they would enjoy, are instead given coal which, back in ye olden tymes, would have pretty much only been used to heat the child's home and benefit the whole family. Coal wasn't just some useless rock to punish kids, it was meant to teach them selflessness.
