all the species in the genus homo (which has appeared around 2 million years ago) have gone extinct, and we have only survived the last human species to go extinct (Homo neanderthalensis) by around 40,000 years; not an extraordinary feat and certainly not something that should make us feel special or that we're not going to face the same fate.
